An Evansville effort to provide winter coats to local children is marking its 40th year this fall.

The Coat-A-Kid campaign got underway on Oct. 6. Children in an after-school program at Potter's Wheel received coats during a kickoff event that day.

Organizers are accepting new and gently used coats through Dec. 31. Donations can be dropped off at any Don's Dry Cleaning and Laundry location, and Don's cleans the donated coats at no cost before they go out.

Distribution is handled through partners that include The Salvation Army Evansville and the Evansville Christian Life Center, with the goal of making cold trips to school more comfortable for children this winter.
