Hoosiers affected by August's storms and historic flooding have until Oct. 25 to apply for federal disaster assistance, state officials say.
The storms knocked out power for hundreds of thousands of people and flooded communities along the White River. Anderson, Noblesville, Carmel and Indianapolis were among the hardest-hit areas, and a federal disaster declaration made residents in 24 counties eligible for individual assistance through FEMA.
More than 60,000 Hoosiers have applied so far, and FEMA has awarded more than $142 million, according to state figures. Total storm damage is expected to approach $1 billion, and crews have removed more than 80,000 cubic yards of debris.
The state has hired disaster services company Tidal Basin to contact people who remain displaced, because officials expect some survivors have not yet applied. Applications can be filed at DisasterAssistance.gov or by calling FEMA at 1-800-621-3362.
